These end mills can be used for various machining operations. While I do not have a full sized Bridgeport style milling machine, I do have a ‘Mill Drill’ machine with a table feed which is capable of most milling operations. These end mills can be mounted in my machine using a collet. They make smooth cuts when I use a soluble oil-water mix as a coolant. The end mill inserts are indexable, so a fresh cutting edge can me exposed when another becomes worn. The kit comes with a tool for rotating the inserts. I anticipate a much longer life for these end mills than the high speed steel mills that I have been using.

Being a wood worker, I don’t often do any metal work, but I got these carbide end mills to use on my Shopsmith. They mount in the router chuck and I can use them for many applications. For someone who has a mill, the replaceable carbide cutters mean less cost, down time, and faster cuts. Wen is showing themselves as a strong competitor in the higher end tool market and these end mills are no exception.

The WEN Square Shoulder Indexable Carbide End Mills help make easy work out of milling a large range of metals, from soft Aluminum unhardened tool steels and high strength stainless steels such as 17-5 and 15-5 PH. They also worked well in milling Inconel (light cuts and lubricated). This set of milling machine tools include 3/8 in., 1/2 in., and 5/8 in. end mills with APKT1003 carbide inserts. The shanks are all ½ inch and have a set screw flat for use with standard mill chucks or collets. The 3/8 and ½ inch mills have a single flute while the 5/8 inch has 2-flutes. Wen states that these are compatible with the WEN 33182A R8 Collet Set for use in the WEN 33013 Metal Milling Machine. I used these in an Emco end mill, with a MT2 collet holder and E25 collets, and with a Bridgeport end mill, R8 collets, with excellent results. In all cases I make very light cuts and good lubrication as these tools and insert bits will not holdup if they are abused trying remove too much material per pass. These mills come in a protective aluminum case that makes for easy storage and transportation between jobs. The mill set also includes a T8 Torx driver for changing the carbide inserts, which are readably available. I modified my storage case so that I could store spare inserts with the cutters. I am very pleased with the quality of these Wen indexable Carbide end mills, which are made in China.

Sharp, sturdy tools in 3 sizes, all with 1/2” shanks. The largest, 5/8” diameter, has two indexable bit cutting flutes, while the the 3/8” and 1/2” diameter cutters are single flute. Each flute has 2 cutting points, so if it gets dull, use the included tool to rotate the insert 180 degrees and continue making chips. I have a 3/8” CNC mill (Taig/MicroProto DSLS 3000), and I thought the smaller 3/8” cutter would fit it, but that’s when I discovered that all 3 cutters have a 1/2” diameter shaft. No problem, my grandfather’s 1950-era Montgomery Ward lathe has a dial-adjustable vise for a Y-axis, then X & Z come from the lathe’s axes. The lathe chuck runs quite true, so no problem mounting these end mills in it, with very nice chips in 6061 aluminum. In my short video, I show this on a brief facing cut with the 5/8” bit. The tools are very nice, high quality with an attractive case. I am enjoying these very much, and I know replacement indexable inserts are readily available in online tool sites. It’ll be a long time before I need any inserts, though!

This is a three piece square shoulder Indexable Carbide End Mill set made by WEN. It includes the more used sizes for a small shop hobbyist. It comes with 3/8”, 1/2′ and 5/8” end mills. The end Mills are indexable, meaning that the inserts made of carbide can be removed, replaced, rotated or flipped to expose a fresh cutting edge. Carbide inserts are known for faster machining and leave better finishes on metal. These end mills have a machined flat to allow them to be used in either an end mill holder or collet. I have used numerous carbide insert cutters on lathes, but little time on the Bridgeport. I will update this review when more Bridgeport time allows. The included aluminum case is a nice addition for bit storage.
