   The WEN 29-piece Fully Ground Black Gold Drill Bit Set is possibly the last drill bit set you will ever need to purchase for normal around-the-house use. Made of high speed steel, these bits are sharp and cut through all types of material with ease. Unlike other bits that I have, these bits leave a clean hole when drilling through wood. The old bits left a splintered finish that had to be cleaned up before using the wood. It is rare that I ever cut through metal, so I cannot speak to that. The black gold finish on the bits is designed to prevent rust due to humidity and prevent excess wear and tear on the bit from heat buildup. The bit sizes range from 1/16 of an inch to 1/2 inch, and includes every bit you will need within that range. I like the fact that the tips of the bits are ground in such a way that they do not “walk” on the material or slip when you begin drilling. Another feature of the bits I have not seen before is the three flat shanks ground onto the shaft. This allows the chuck of the drill to firmly grip the bit and eliminate the bit spinning in the chuck should it get stuck. The case is made of a sturdy plastic that will last a long time, and has the bit sizes stamped onto the holder in white numbers. That eliminates straining your eyes to see the size of the bit that is engraved into the shank. The sliding lock on the case will prevent the case from inadvertently opening and the bits spilling everywhere. That is the voice of experience speaking and it is not fun. This set will replace all of my old bits, including the size duplications. WEN has created another great product for the DIYer with this drill bit set!

   Like most other DIY’ers I’ve got a fair number of drill bits, some loose, some in sets. I tend to keep them in tool bags or boxes along with a drill/driver, fasteners, etc. Really handy for a ‘grab-n-go’.My problem is my Wen drill press in my basement shop – I’ve never got the right drill bit near the press since they’re all scattered in tool sets.This new Wen DB292G drill bit set has solved that problem (see photos below). This set, to me, is a “general” bit set – bits run from 1/16” to 1/2” in increments of 1/64” inch. With 1/64” increments I’ll now have the proper size on hand up to 1/2”. (As of this writing the “product description” on the H/D website says “3/8” is the top size, but my kit runs all the way to 1/2”).The ‘point split’ is at 135, so bit ‘walking’ is minimized. Of course, on my drill press, used with a drill vise, these new bits hit right on the money. The bits seem plenty sharp enough for general woodworking, plastic, or light metal work. How long they’ll stay sharp, it’s too early to tell. Not being ‘hammer’ drill rated or specialty coated for specific materials, I imagine that the bits can be readily sharpened (YMMV – I haven’t tried to run them through a drill doctor or some such since I just started using the kit). The fit and finish is excellent, and the kit includes a plastic carrying case (see photo below). Each drill size is clearly marked on the inside of case (white lettering on black plastic). One great feature of the case – the bits are held well, but not so securely that you need needle nosed pliers to pry the bits out of the case. The bits slide in/out without any problem and, with the lid closed, don’t flop all over the kit. The case seems to be well constructed – time will tell if it holds up as well as a metal case might. The hinge is a true pinned hinge, not a molded plastic hinge that will eventually fail due to material fatigue. There’s a latch on the kit to keep it from accidentally opening and, once fully opened, it doesn’t overbalance and fall over.Given the range of bits, the nifty case, and the quality of the bits I think this kit works as advertised which, generally in my view (YMMV), deserves 5 stars.The kit comes with a 90-day return policy.HTHRegards,Jim

   The WEN Brand, Fully Ground Black Gold High Speed Steel Twist Drill Bit Set with Carrying Case (29-Piece) are feature packed premium jobber length drill bits at an affordable price. There is no listing of the material these bits are made from. They perform like cobalt alloy or Titanium coated, and are gold in color like each type. These relived and precision ground split point bits are so accurate, not even a center punch is required to start a perfectly located hole in mild steel. Truly amazing. Having drilled though a quarter inch of mild steel, the bit felt no warmer than 130-degrees F. Even the gold color was still present on the tip of the bit suggesting either titanium coated or cobalt alloy steel since their performance was similar from my experience. The thing that surprised me the most about these premium bits was the ease with which they cut through back side of mild steel. The bit didn’t grab and did not wind the work piece up the drill bit flutes, they just cut though the other side with ease, leaving a true, clean, square hole all the way though steel. There are three flats ground on the shanks so they chuck up securely and resist turning in the drill bit chuck. Drilling wood was just as impressive. Usually breakthrough of a drill bit on the other side of wood can leave broken and splintered wood grain. These bits cut clean and true through wood leaving a truly clean and square hole. Absolutely delivering nothing less than amazing performance in all-purpose drill bits. These bits are provided in a plastic storage case and I prefer a metal case. While there is nothing wrong with the plastic case, to me, it does not match the quality of the bits inside.

   The Fully Ground Black Gold High Speed Steel Twist Drill Bit Set with Carrying Case (29-Piece) is a must have around the your home/garage! The carrying case box is very well organized, but its a bit flimsy and doesn’t secure the bits in each individual place. They do come well-oiled which is a huge plus and I wasnt necessarily sure on the coloring- but the black/gold finish holds up and will prove a long life without rust or wear!
