This sander works very well. I really like the idea that I can use it as a bench sander too. None of my past sanders could be used this way so I’m very happy.

This sander was perfect for my just completed task preparing sections of a floor for refinishing after parts of the floor had been damaged by water leaks. The variable speed works well and very convenient. The trigger switch in the handle has a very nice feel and is very positive in both the open and closed positions. The weight was perfect for removing old polyurethane and wood that had swollen from being immersed in water. I only needed to hold and guide the unit, not push down on it. Of course, the hallmark feature of belt sanders is that they remove material quickly and this sander worked really fast. I clamped the device for benchtop use using the supplied clamps and it was surprisingly stable, much more so than I was expecting.

I liked the idea of a dual hand held/stationary belt sander and the price was hard to turn down. All in all, this functions well as both, maybe not as well as true hand Sanders or bench units. But it worked well enough for me- a hobbyist. The only real disappointment is the dust collection bin. This is a joke and does not fit well or stay on the unit while in use. you would be better off configuring a connection to a vacuum dust collection system.

A nice compact sander. It’s light weight and the bench clamps are nice sanding smaller parts. Easy to change sanding belts also.It helping me sand off old stain on my wood patio furniture.

Liked the easy use but the dust collector kept falling off and while sanding thresholds was too big to get to the sides.

WEN 7-Amp Corded 3 in. x 21 in. Variable Speed Combination Handheld and Benchtop Belt SanderWith the recent purchase of a fixer-upper home, we have found the need for a large variety of power tools to help make our work a little easier. To cut down on expenses, if a tool can serve more than one purpose, it makes it an even better selection. That’s exactly what the WEN variable speed combination handheld and benchtop belt sander does. For sanding needs on existing wood (deck rails, doors and frames, and more) using the sander as a handheld tool works just fine. When working with smaller pieces of material where you will need both hands to position for sanding, this tool converts to a benchtop belt sander (needed brackets included). To help make that use more practical, WEN has included in their design a power-on switch lock. To cut down on the dust, there are several collection/reduction options available. It also came with a starter supply of 80-grit sandpaper.

Great tool!

It is a good little machine. It has enough power to get through hardwoods, the dust collection isn’t the best about half goes into that dust bag and half is just left on your surface, but it doesn’t shoot it off into the air so I’m not unhappy with it. The flat bottom and two clamps are a bonus

WEN 5-Amp Corded 3 inch x 18 inch Variable Speed Combination Handheld and Benchtop Belt Sander can be used two ways. Firstly, its a standard 3×18-inch portable belt sander and secondly, this is new, its also has a stationary option so it can be mounted as a bench sander for small woodworking projects. This is a great idea as I could never justify a stationary sander and this one does both tasks with one tool. It comes with two small C-type clamps that open about 2-inches to attach the sander to a worktop lip. The C-clamp attaches into two holes in the sander body and to the workbench. It really feels solid when attached and doesn’t vibrate or shift. This sander has a hard plastic dust collection box, if you slip it off, it has two included adapters to replace it with a dust extraction vacuum hose. I have a small 1 1/4-inch vacuum hose that fit fine, used it with both adapters. The sander comes with two sanding belts. Its a variable speed sander with a thumb knob that’s contentiously controllable from 558 to 820-feet/minute located in front of the rear handle. Changing the belt itself is not difficult, push on the metal lever on the side, it loosens the belt that just slips it off. Slide a new one on and adjust the Philips screw tracking adjustment on the front left side, if needed. The tracking screw keeps the belt centered over the flat metal plate underneath the belt on the tool. As a portable sander, its light weight, they recommend using both hands, but in the right situation you could use one hand its that controllable, in my opinion. Its light weight and compact, a small one so is easy to control. The older one’s were beasts you needed both hands to operate, this one doesn’t have that same problem at all when I used it. It comes with a trigger start button and a lock out so it will run without needing to hold down the trigger. This is a good belt sander that serves double duty for a good price.

As I start to work with large pieces of lower grade or older wood, I have found this WEN belt sander to be perfect for aggressive sanding of large workpieces. It is very powerful and can take down stock fast. I have used both in conjunction with my electric hand planer (to smooth out spots where the planer was too aggressive) and by itself to plane large boards that didn’t need my hand planer as a starting point. The six different speed settings are accessible by a knob built into the trigger (although what stop is what speed is unclear, other than lowest and highest). The tool is heavy, but no heavier than other belt sanders I have looked at and its weight helps hold it down on the work piece. It does not vibrate too much nor is it excessively loud, but I would recommend wearing gloves and hearing protection if you are going to use it for an extended period.Dust collection on this tool is actually pretty good; the dust box attachment does a pretty good job of trapping a lot of the dust. I have not hooked it up to my vacuum system yet (the tool comes with adaptors); for that I will need a longer hose than I have, but for now the on-board dust collection is good.Mine came with two 80 grit belts; I have actually ordered a variety pack of different grit belts to cover all the jobs I am going to use this for, as well as a belt cleaner to prolong the life of the belts. Setting up the positioning and tracking of the belt initially was a little tricky, but after a little manual repositioning I got it to work just fine (even though I tore up my first belt a bit). The real reason I settled on the WEN was its ability to be easily switched to a bench top sander with the included mounting clamps. I want to use this to not only sand work but to also sharpen my hatchets and axes, something that can be done nicely on a belt sander. It has a nice footprint and I can already think of a lot of uses for it with my limited space here. The only disappointment I have with the tool is the plastic trigger, which is kind of flimsy and “loose” (can’t explain it any other way). It work fine but might lead to a durability issue in the future, but at the price for this tool it is not a deal breaker. If you want a good DIY-er belt sander, this is for you. Finally, DO read the instruction manual if you have never used a tool like this before; it can get away from you pretty quickly if you don’t follow instructions!

It seems to work well. A couple negatives I have are the filter that pushes onto the side keeps falling apart. It is made in 2 halves (ABS plastic) and the 2 halves don’t seem to stay together very well. I ended up just taking it off. The lever holding the sandpaper on is also plastic. Seems cheap.
