Like many woodworker’s I pride myself on my joinery. Dowels provide an important tool in my arsenal, necessary for butt joints. I have several dowel kits, but wanted to add a 5/16” option, so I picked up this Wen unit. It includes most of the items that you would typically find in a kit, including a brad-point bit (a necessity), two locator pins (somewhat standard), and a depth collar for the bit. The difference in this kit is a metal collar held in place by an Allen head set screw (Allen wrench included.) I cannot tell you how many times the rubber band on my ¼” kit has slipped, many times ruining a piece that I already had precious time in by drilling the hole too deep. I just got this kit but I am already impressed with it. (Note attached picture of Pennsylvania Spice Box. Other than the hinges and lock, there is not a nail or screw in it. It is held together with dowels, dovetails, and dados. The toybox also uses dowels and the only screw are in the casters.)
