Chuck is well made and well balanced and fits my WEN 12×18 lathe perfectly. Oh yes, and this chuck also fits my smaller 8×12 Wen lathe. There were some parts included that I have no idea what they are for. I finally figured out that the rear plate rotated to open & close jaws. Using the knock-out bar that came with the lathe works ok but you need 2. Thankfully I have a smaller Wen lathe so I have 2 knock out bars. There were no instructions or owners manual. I contacted WEN for help and received this ‘simple’ answer, “We have not produced manuals for this product yet”. Pun intended! I am just starting to turn bowels and have been gluing and screwing a high grade plywood disc on the back of my projects and using the faceplate. The depth of jaws is exactly 3/4 inch so the bottom of the bowl sets on the jaw face and that is an easy way to turn the faces true even if I remove the unfinished project from chuck then re-chuck it again. I was hoping this chuck would give me more versatility but again being new to wood lathes and WITHOUT an owners manual I have to experiment. I have not yet used this chuck yet as I am in the middle of some long term projects.

No means of tightening the jaws. Project comes loose and flies off the machine. Project is notched as to specs. Jaws loosen on their own.

I bought this chuck and have not been disappointed yet! I have used it on a couple of projects and it was quick and easy to figure out. Comes out of the box and straight into the lathe with no major assembly. Another great WEN product.

The Wen 4 inch 4-Jaw Self Centering Chuck is a great addition to a variety of woodworking lathes that use the 1 inch x 8 TPI mount. I tested the chuck with the Wen 3420 8 inch x 12 inch woodworking lathe. The chuck had smooth action and gripped the wood well. The chuck is opened and closed with round chuck keys that are included. You insert them in holes in two different sections of the chuck and rotate them in opposite directions to open/close the chuck. While the chuck also has M4 hex bolts holding together, a wrench was not included unlike other chuck models. In addition there is a bolt you can screw into your piece of wood and clamp the chuck down on the end of the bolt instead of directly on your work piece. Internal grip range is 2 inch to 2-3/4 inch.External grip range is 1-5/8 inch to 2-3/8 inch.Out of the box, the chuck had a curl of metal left inside the 1 inch x 8 TPI mount area left over from creating the threads which I had to remove before I could mount the chuck. Easily resolved but shows manufacturing quality control issues.

The work piece slips while working on it. Got to keep stopping and making adjustments to keep it straight. Other than that, it’s a good accessory.
