This was obtained to use for making pens on my new wood lathe. I like the quality of the construction and the ease of use. This is my first pen mandrel and is should be the last. I set it up and got to work making pen bodies. I didn’t know something like this existed. I have a Jet lathe and this worked fine and should work on any lathe of the last 100 years. Something I would purchase again.

Easy for kids to use. Nice mandrel for a mini lathe. I’m not a pen turner, but I set this up on one of the mini lathes in the school shop and borrowed a stray 12-year-old. I handed her a box of blanks and pen parts and pointed her at a couple of YouTube videos on pen turning. This mandrel is not exactly like the ones we found in the videos, but we were able to get the idea and turned out a few pen and pencil barrels. Main thing is that a moderately smart middle school kid figured it out without much fuss.

This is a good quality mandrel but be aware that it does not fit a Delta or Jet mini lathe. It is built from good quality material and you can adjust the length by a compression nut that secures the mandrel into the stock. I do a lot of pen turning and this mandrel would work very well if it were not for my lathe being a Delta. It would be better if the mandrel was shipped with a plastic tube rather than in a bag. The plastic tube serves to protect the mandrel during storage and helps to prevent rust

This mandrel works just as good as any other. It is nice that the length is adjustable. The only downside is the nut for the adjustment is big. It’s not bad, but the other mandrels have much smaller adjustment nuts.

The Wooden Lathe Pen-Turning MT1 Mandrel is a valuable addition to my collection of wood turning tools. I have been making pens for over 20 years and have purchased several pen turning mandrels in that time. Many of them lacked the precision and ease of use that this mandrel offers. It is well machined and runs true. It is sturdy enough to handle the pressures of turning without the flex and wobble of other mandrels. I am truly impressed with this tool.

Does exactly what it was made for. Quick set up –easy to use. You will need to get the wood blanks, pen parts and specific bushings for each type of pen. Works well with the Wen wood lathe.

This is a good quality mandrel, necessary for turning pens. Necessary, but not, of course sufficient–you’ll still need a lathe, chisels, wood blanks, and pen kits if you’re going to make pens. It comes with several different bushings, but you may need additional bushings to fit the particular pen kits you wish to make. Also, this is made for lathes that have #1 Morse Tapers. If yours have a different size–most midi-sized and up are MT2–you’ll need an adapter. The mandrel also comes without a user manual. There are guides to making pens online that can show you what you need to know, but I found it odd that there were no instructions at all. Remember when everything came with an instruction manual?

A very good pen mandrel in the hard to find MT1. It comes with 5 slimline bushings, and turns straight.
