I have always had good luck with Western Digital Drives. I have only had this one for a few months so I can’t really talk about longevity, but the WD Black drives seem to be some of the best made drives and have the longest warranty (5 years) that I have seen. I doubt you can do better, and the small extra cost over the consumer grade drives with 2 or 3 warranties is worth the peace of mind to me. Of course, even with a very nice hard drive, always back-up your data!

This is my second WD Black 7200 RPM drive that I’ve owned, and the first that I’ve bought from B&H. On this order, the drive was DOA. It would spin-up, but I could not initialize it and ultimately RMA’d it and used a WD Gold 7200 RPM drive for my backup prior to upgrading my OS. The Rona has slowed B&H down a bit, but they were fabulous in granting my RMA and sending out a second Black drive that works as expected. Thank you B&H. I use these as external drives for offline backups. I house these in external drive enclosures as single units and only bring them online to add files (remove from my RAID drive) or to pull from backups as we need them. We edit at least 30 GB of video files per week and including export files, need to move at least 50 GB of files offline per week. In the 7 years that we’ve been doing this, all of our WD drives have worked flawless. Transfer speed from my RAID 5 via USB3 to a single external WD Black is around 120 MB/sec on large sequential files.

I was using the Hitachi version of these forever (like 20 of them) for audio and video intensive work. That drive was recommended by the guys at Graid, because they used them in their externals. I heard WD bought the Hitachi division a couple of years back, when my go to’s were now discontinued. I had MAJOR bad luck with WD drives in the past. I tested out two of these last year (one for backup, I buy them in pairs for this reason). Working perfectly. Two more, perfect, two more, perfect. (6 total now). Still got my fingers crossed that at the two year mark, the first two don’t fail, on the same day, like a couple of older WD drives in the past (15 years ago). Installed those original WDs in two different PCs on the same day (I uses two for beta testing software product) They BOTH failed on the same day exactly two years later. OMG. I’ve had many other WD drives that didn’t last as long as my other brands, so I stayed away from WD, until last year. So I was very reluctant to use WD. But hey, I gave it another shot, thinking that the Hitachi buy gave them better tech. FIngers crossed. 🙂 But pretty confident that these will last as my Hitachi versions, which are still all running strong after 8+ years…

I had purchased a new computer with a 512GB SSD and a 2 TB internal drive. Since photography is my thing, I burn up lots of disk space and the 2TB drive wasn’t going to make me happy so I decided to swap it out for a 4TB. Western Black drives have a really good reputation and the 5 year warranty is very reassuring. When you have can’t replace it files you need to go for the quality. It installed and formatted easily and is happily running in my new tower.

Nice drive, however it does make a little clicking noise. Nothing that is distracting, but the computer that I installed the drive into had an existing SSD drive that didn’t make any noise at all. Happy with this purchase.

I had a 1/2 TB second drive and filled it up so I decided to replace it with a 2TB drive. I’ve used Western Digital drives for years, mostly the Black series, and have been very pleased with them. I thought about getting a 3TB drive but there seem to be a lot of reviews that say they are noisy so I decided to just go with a 2TB drive. I found that prices of the 2TB Caviar Black varied and there are different model numbers as well. I went to the Western Digital site and looked at their model numbers to make sure what I was buying was on their list. They all seem to have the same specifications so I’m not sure why all the different model numbers. I found a retail packaged drive at B&H that was competitively priced in comparison to OEM drives elsewhere so I went ahead and ordered it. With a retail package you normally get at least a sealed box, whereas OEM drives sometimes arrive in just a plain box, wrapped in bubble wrap and placed in a unsealed anti-static envelope. I’ve ordered drives from various other online suppliers and now B&H. So far I’m very pleased with B&H. Shipping was very fast. The drive installed just fine and is no noisier than my primary drive which is a WD Caviar Black 1TB. I’ve used other drive manufacturers in the past, but I seem to have better luck with WD drives. I’m more into reliability than speed.
