Have had several WD Drives. Use it for system image. Today I see error messages after attempting a backup. Then the Drive started beeping when I reconnected it. I tried the site to locate my Drive Warranty and the site says it does not recognize my product. Disappointed to say the least especially after less than 2 months use.

Rather than using a standard USB-C connector, this WD drive uses the same non-standard USB plug (the same that Seagate uses) on the drive side. This is a real pain, as it means that you have to carry the cable with you. I bought WD instead of SD to get a standard plug.
Celestine Wunsch (verified owner) –
The drive is highly functional. However, it is very slow in response. Good drive to store large quantities of items that do not need to be accessed very quickly.
Leonel Heaney (verified owner) –
Very easy to set up and use, made very well comes with everything to get you started using the external drive.

Works great. I reformatted it so it operate as just a storage drive on my Macbook Air.

-1st one was working fine. Formatted it to get rid of the 100% USELESS data mining software on it. So far so good. -2nd says Read Only/Write Protected. What?! The useless software says I HAVE TO install a 3rd party software on it! Riiiight! Some wasted time on Win/WD forums later turns out it should be error checked first, and you can remove the attribute in DISKPART after. Win10 says the drive has errors. Needs repair. This is NOT a new thing. Seen reports from 2017. What WD have done to fix the problem and ensure their customers can use their products? Nothing. They mass produce it and hope some will work. Now off to drive an hour so I can send this paperweight back and wait till the next is here and hope it works. Make sure you buy it weeks before you need it.

It’s fast and it’s portable. It makes a lot of clicking, which is expected for a non-SSD. I use it to backup my Mac.

the WD 5TB Passport USB is small, light, durable, reliable, and fast. Not to mention an unbeatable price at B&H.

Its nice but the software to use is a bit of pain, everytime I turn on my computer I get error message that the drive cannot be started and needs to scan for errors, a real pain. It only offers backup not a clone that would continuously add files as I use the laptop. I had to remove the password, due that when you boot it cannot start the drive and the password would not pop up, I have to manually search the app and enter password and then run the app to run the back up, kind of like the 80’s I thought we are in the 21st century and advance technology existed. It may be a ok drive but terrible software. My old one that is 15 years old, no longer works because the software does not support windows 10 or 11, so I cannot access my files backed up. No support. I may have same with this new one, in 5 years no support for the software or updates.

I like the compact size with the capacity to hold a lot of data. I have other WD devices and I love the portability.
Bonnie Champlin (verified owner) –
No problems with this unit which is big enough to store all my data.

I’ve most always used My Passport for backing up my photos. You plug it in, it’s ready to run, and unless you drop it really hard it’s going to keep on humming, even years later when you need to find that old image.

I have several My Passport external hard drives and never had any problems with them. I feel they are very reliable. I love the red as well.
Toy Kutch (verified owner) –
I’ve got three of the My Passport drives all with encryption enabled. I use them for backups and they work fine except that after my system sleeps and wakes they flip into read-only state. Unplugging and reconnecting them fixes the problem until the next sleep.

I have been using this type of drive for 25 years or so. I started with a 40 GB by another company and every 3 years I buy a higher capacity and copy everything on the old one to the new drive then put the old one away for backup. Hard drives don’t suffer from too many reads or writes but time is a significant factor. HDD (hard disk drives) are much slower than SSDs but still plenty fast for spreadsheets, documents, and storing product information like PDFs. In this application all I want is reliable access to information for many years.
